After arriving late in 1967, Troop H was thrust directly into field operations just before the 1968 Tet Offensive, a massive country-wide North Vietnamese surprise assault. During this timeframe, the ground scouts of Troop H were actively screening areas, protecting supply routes, and absorbing heavy combat duties to defend allied bases. Because Troop H, 17th Cavalry Regiment was a compact ground reconnaissance element (consisting of only about 150–180 active cavalry scouts, armored vehicle crewmen, and support staff at any given time), he was part of a very tightly-knit brotherhood operating under the 198th Infantry Brigade. Making this piece exceptionally rare.
